neuropathy of the lower extremity.

Symptoms of Sciatic Neuropathy –

The symptoms of Sciatic Neuropathy sometimes mimic those of common fibular (peroneal) division making its diagnosis more challenging.

Symptoms of sciatic neuropathologies include:

  • Foot drop that mimics a common fibular (peroneal) neuropathy at the knee
  • Weakness in knee flexion, hamstrings, ankle plantar flexion, ankle inversion
  • Decreased ankle jerk
  • Pain and loss of sensation in the foot and lateral shin
  • Weakness in ankle dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, toe extension and flexion
  • Dysesthesic pain and/or numbness in the sole and dorsum of the foot and in the lateral lower leg

Thankfully electrophysiologic studies can help localize the lesion causing Sciatic Neuropathy. Needle Electromyography and Nerve Conduction studies are used in tandem.

  • A Nerve Conduction Study measures the nerve signals in your foot and leg to ensure that the nerve is conducting the signal effectively. The Nerve Conduction Study is an important tool used to see how severe your sciatic neuropathy is and will help your treating doctor recommend the best course of treatment.
  • Electromyogram (EMG) to measure the electrical activity in your muscles. This is to determine if you have suffered any nerve damage.
