How EMG/NCS Testing Helps Doctors Diagnose Pain Conditions

EMG/NCS testing helps doctors make a diagnosis. Many people develop chronic pain conditions over the course of their lives. This can be due to a traumatic injury, degeneration because of repetitive movements, or a chronic disease like diabetes. Along with tests like x-rays, MRI, and CT scans, EMG/NCS testing can help doctors determine the cause of pain and the existence and extent of nerve damage. This will in turn help them to come up with an effective treatment plan for patients suffering with chronic pain. While it’s common to equate EMG and NCS testing, they are two separate tests.

The Nerve Conduction Study Stimulates the Nerves

During a nerve conduction study, the doctor stimulates either sensory or sensorimotor nerves with a mild electric current. Most patients report a low-key sensation. It’s very short and not painful. The study can show whether the problem is a nerve or a muscle disorder. There are no risks associated with EMG/NCS testing. However, if you have a pacemaker or indwelling catheter, let the doctor know before the test begins.

For the EMG portion of the test, tiny needles are inserted into different muscles. The doctor tests each one individually to determine whether the patient has a muscle, nervous system, or neuromuscular disease. Altogether, patients can expect the test to take around an hour or hour and a half. Do let the doctor know if you experience discomfort or need a break.

Once the EMG/NCS study is finished, you will meet with your referring doctor to go over the results. The information from the study, along with any other tests, will direct the course of treatment the doctor recommends. Some patients will find physical therapy to be very helpful in reducing symptoms. Others may need to consider medication or surgery. The treatment will depend on what disorders the tests detect and how far advanced the problem is.

If you suffer with chronic pain, speak with your doctor as soon as you can. Ask about whether EMG and NCS testing could be helpful. Get in touch with Precision Medical Group to learn more about testing and how to get a referral.
