What You Should Know About Nerve Testing and How to Prepare

Learn everything you need to know about nerve testing. At Precision Medical Group, we focus on nerve testing, specifically electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Doctors prescribe these tests so they can diagnose or rule out conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathy, and herniated discs. Patients may have symptoms including nerve pain, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling.

How Does Nerve Testing Work?

The goal of a nerve test is to measure how well the nerves are able to transmit signals. Healthy nerves can send signals at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. However, if there is a blockage or nerve damage, the transmission can be both slower and weaker. A nerve conduction study will measure both the strength and speed of signal transmission. The doctor will place two electrodes on your skin, at a set distance. One will send a mild electrical impulse, and the other will record it. You may feel a brief tingling or the way you feel when you feel a shock from static. The test can be somewhat uncomfortable, but the feeling won’t last after the test is over.

If you are having electromyography, it will come after the nerve conduction study. The doctor will insert some small needles into your skin where you feel weakness or other symptoms. As you relax and contract your muscles, a machine will record the electrical activity of the muscles.

How Do I Prepare for an EMG/NCS Test?

On the day of your EMG/NCS test, don’t put any lotions or oils on your skin. Ask your doctor if you should avoid them for several days leading up to the test. You should also remove any metal jewelry or other accessories. Don’t wear clothing with metal zippers, for example. You may need to change into a medical gown.

If you come in for nerve testing at Precision Medical Group, the test will be an outpatient procedure. You should be able to go home and take part in your normal activities once testing is finished. If you feel any lingering discomfort, let your doctor know right away. Don’t forget to make a list of all medications and supplements that you take to share with your doctor. It’s also a good idea to write down any questions you have so that you don’t forget.
