As the largest provider of EMG/NCS testing in California, Precision Medical Group is very familiar with working alongside Personal Injury Attorneys, Case Managers and Practice Managers to help accident victims receive a timely and accurate diagnosis.
We know that most personal injury attorneys and practice managers are familiar with tests such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT Scans (Computerized Tomography). This article is intended to describe additional tests, mainly EMG/NCS testing, in an effort to give you additional diagnostic testing options for your clients. EMG/NCS can be used as an adjunct to MRI and CT Scans and, in some cases, is the preferred or only option to make an objective nerve injury diagnosis.
What is an EMG/NCS/NCV?
The specialized language of medicine can be confusing when there are apparently three acronyms that all refer to the same thing.
- EMG stands for Electromyography, a measure of muscle response or electrical activity in response to a stimulus from a small electrode
- NCS stands for Nerve Conduction Study, a reference to the actual test we perform
- NCV stands for Nerve Conduction Velocity, the speed at which an electrical impulse moves through your nerve.
How can it help your client?
When a person is injured in an accident of any kind, whether automotive, industrial or home, the injury involves multiple body structures such as bones and soft tissues.
Soft tissues are muscles, including the heart, fat, blood vessels, tendons, fascia and, of course, nerves.
Nerves are of crucial importance to a normal, healthy body because they control all of the body’s functions and movements.
By using an EMG/NCV test we can pinpoint the nerve that is damaged and determine the severity of the damage.
If a patient is showing nerve injury symptoms, this can possibly demonstrate a more significant injury.
Common symptoms of a nerve injury include:
- Regularly dropping objects you’re holding.
- Radiating pain to arms or legs.
- Numbness or tingling in hands or feet.
- Muscle weakness, especially in your arms or legs.
In the event your client shows any of the above symptoms, an EMG/NCS test may be indicated to rule out nerve injury. Precision Medical Group is California’s leading provider of EMG/NCS testing services.
