Radial Neuropathy Testing California at Precision EMG

The Radial Nerve runs the entire length of the arm. A Radial Neuropathy is one of the mononeuropathies that results from an acute trauma or the entrapment and compression of the radial nerve.

Other common terms used for radial neuropathy include:

  • Saturday Night Palsy – when one falls asleep on an arm compressing the nerve
  • Honeymoon Palsy – when one’s mate sleeps on and compresses the nerve in your arm overnight

Symptoms of Saturday Night Palsy –

Due to the length of this nerve and the many locations in which it can be injured there is a wide variety of symptoms that can present themselves:

  • Wrist drop
  • Numbness in the hand and wrist
  • Inability to straighten fingers
  • Inability to straighten wrist due to the loss of function in the forearm muscles
  • Weakness or paralysis in some of the forearm and arm muscles
  • Sharp or burning pain

Testing for Radial Neuropathy –

In addition to physical exams or an MRI or ultrasound, your Doctor may order electrodiagnostic testing in order to accurately diagnose your Honeymoon Palsy.

  • A Nerve Conduction Study to measure the nerve signals in your arm to ensure that the nerve is conducting the signal effectively. The Nerve Conduction Study is an important tool your doctor uses to see how severe your radial neuropathy is and will help your treating doctor recommend the best course of treatment.
  • Electromyogram (EMG) to measure the electrical activity in your muscles. This is to determine if you have suffered any nerve damage.
