Myopathy Testing - Precision Medical Group EMG & NCS Testing in California

Myopathies is a Greek term that means “muscle disease”. It describes a larger group of neuromuscular disorders in which the main symptom is dysfunction of muscle fibers that control voluntary movement in the body.

Some myopathies are genetic, or congenital, and can pass from parent to child while others are acquired later in life with myositis, metabolic disorders, and autoimmune disease as possible causes. Naturally this later group is collectively known as Acquired Myopathies.

Symptoms of Myopathies -

  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle soreness or pain (myalgias)
  • Muscle cramps
  • Stiffness
  • Tetany (involuntary contraction)

Testing for Myopathies -

After a careful examination of the affected area by your Doctor you may be prescribed an electrodiagnostic test such as:

  • Electromyogram (EMG) to measure the electrical activity in your muscles. This is to confirm the presence and severity of the myopathy. The EMG can also indicate special findings such as myotonic potentials.
