Mask wearing helps against coronavirus and wildfiresOne of the biggest things we can all do right now to lower our risk for COVID-19 is mask wearing. Experts agree that the best kind is an N95 mask. It filters 95% of particles 0.3 microns or larger. COVID-19 is thought to be spread primarily through respiratory droplets that are 5 to 10 microns in size, so this type of mask is very effective. However, they are also in short supply. Frontline healthcare workers should have priority in obtaining these masks. Experts agree that KN95 masks, which are manufactured and tested in other countries, can be very effective, too. They’re also easier to get, so ordinary people can use them.

On the other hand, cloth masks are also useful in slowing the spread of the virus. People can make their own masks or purchase them from lots of businesses. There’s no problems with taking protective equipment from first responders and healthcare workers.

Unfortunately in California, we’re dealing with wildfires on top of COVID-19. The fires have made the air very unhealthy at times. This leads people to wonder whether mask wearing will shield them from breathing in smoke and particulates. N95 or KN95 masks are very effective against them. Cloth masks may help some, but wildfire particles are much smaller than respiratory droplets. If you need to go outside, an N95-type mask is your best bet. Staying inside, especially if you have an air purifier with an HEPA filter, will protect you from hazardous material in the air during a wildfire.
