Cervical Radiculopathy Test

Cervical Radiculopathy is a condition that is characterized by pain in the arm, or tingling and numbness in a dermatomal distribution (area on the skin represented by a cervical nerve root level) in the hand or upper extremity, and the experience of weakness in specific muscle groups.

It can be caused by either natural degeneration of the intervertebral discs, an acute disc herniation or nearby bone spur that leads to cervical nerve root compression, or nerve root stretching or injury. In some cases nerve root irritation can be caused by chemical pain mediators.

Cervical Radiculopathy Testing -

Beside the usual course of physical exams, provocative tests and checking for findings of myelopathy and other imaging tests, your treating or referring doctor may recommend electrodiagnostic testing.

This can take the form of either Electromyography or Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) to aid in diagnosis. Electromyography can check nerve and muscle function as well as nerve communication by using testing apparatus designed to monitor electrical (nerve) activity in the muscle. The Nerve Conduction Study is a test to see whether nerves are sending their electrical signals at the appropriate speed.
