Brachial Plexopathy Testing in California - Precision Medical Group

Brachial plexopathy is another form of peripheral neuropathy that occurs when there is damage to the brachial plexus.

The brachial plexus is an area on both sides of the neck and shoulders areas where the nerve roots from the spinal cord split into the nerves in each arm.

Damage to these nerves results in pain, weakness, or decreased sensation in the hand, arm, and shoulder.

Brachial Plexopathy has a number of possible causes including an injury directly to the nerves, stretching injuries (which may include birth trauma), compression from tumors in the area (particularly lung tumors), or damage that results from radiation therapy used in the treatment of cancer.

Symptoms of Brachial Plexopathy -

  • Pain
  • Weakness and/or numbness
  • Loss of feeling in the arms
  • Paralysis

Testing for Brachial Plexopathy -

After a careful examination of the affected area of neck, shoulders, and arm(s) by your Doctor you may be prescribed an electrophysiological test such as:

  • A Nerve Conduction Study to measure the nerve signals in your arm to ensure that the nerve is conducting the signal effectively and at the proper speed. The Nerve Conduction Study is an important tool your doctor uses to see how severe your Brachial Plexopathy is and will help your treating doctor recommend the best course of treatment.
  • Electromyogram (EMG) to measure the electrical activity in your muscles when they contract and when they are at rest. This is to determine if you have suffered any nerve damage.
