When Weather Affects Sciatica Pain

If you suffer from sciatica, you may have noticed that your pain feels worse depending on the weather. There is a link between the weather and how severe sciatica pain is. The truth is, pain gets worse in the winter. When it’s cold outside, muscles become more tense and tight. This is due to decreased blood flow. In the warmer months, muscles are looser, which lessens the pain.

Since the cold weather causes muscles to be more stiff, you may find yourself with more injuries. This could be especially true if you live in an area that gets hit with snow and you have to shovel often. If you shovel snow, this can make an underlying condition, such as a herniated disc or radiculopathy, worse. Talk to your doctor about ways to stay safe in the winter and reduce pain. Also mention any increase in symptoms during the cold months and inquire about EMG/NCS testing if necessary.

Tips To Calm Sciatica Pain

Here are a few tips to help keep your back healthy in the colder months. First, stretch before any physical exertion outdoors. Do a few simple, gentle stretches inside to loosen up before heading out into the cold. Next, avoid sudden movements. Lift things slowly and gently, don’t abruptly lift or reach for something. Also, wear plenty of layers when you are outside. Keeping your body warm will help to keep your muscles warm. Another tip, which is important any time of the year, is to stay hydrated. Drink at least 8-10 glasses each day. Last, eat healthy foods and exercise to maintain a healthy body weight. If you are overweight, there will be extra pressure placed on your sciatic nerve. If you need tips for an exercise program, talk with your doctor.

No matter the season, get in touch with your doctor if your sciatica symptoms worsen. Your doctor can work with you to create a plan to relieve your sciatica.
